Circle of Pine Trees, the Year in Books - Cloud Atlas

One of my New Years resolutions this year was to make more time for reading.  I set myself the task of reading at least one book a month.  I have not done well so far, it is just so difficult to find the time.   When I was younger I always had my head stuck in a book, I would disappear for hours and mum always knew she would find me engrossed in a book, losing all sense of time.  One of my enduring memories of Primary school was the bookcase of classic children's books that I worked my way through, my favourite being The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

I saw the Circle of Pine Trees the Year in Books badge on other bloggers pages and thought it was a brilliant idea and was hopefully the nudge I needed to get more reading done.  I usually buy my books from charity shops or a site called greenmetropolis where you can buy and sell used books.

My book for July is cloud atlas by David Mitchell.  Described as 'Six interlocking lives - one amazing adventure.  In a narrative that circles the globe and reaches from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of time, genre and language to offer an enthralling vision of humanity's will to power, and where it will lead us.'

I saw the film a few months ago, I enjoyed it and felt that I would like to read the book which may go into the stories in more detail.

I will let you know what I think, hopefully by the end of July.

  2. This looks good.
I always have a novel going and lying on my bedside table (besides a love of reading it's a professional thing too - I teach literature). I'm so used to reading in bed at night I can't go to sleep anymore otherwise!

  3. Thanks you for your kind comments on my latest blog post. Welcome to the year in books project too... isn't it great. Not only have I added some interesting reads to my list but met lots of new (to me) bloggers. I hope you enjoy Cloud Atlas. I read it a little while ago but found it a bit of a struggle - some parts easier than others.

  10. Thanks Jean, just started but enjoying it so far. I usually read a book before seeing a film not the other way around. But the film was so complex I wanted to delve deeper by reading it x

  11. I read this and loved some storylines but not others. It's quite a challenging read if you are out of the habit of reading though.

  12. I read this several years ago, and enjoyed it very much. I think he is a very original writer. Good luck with finishing. It's either feast or famine on the reading front here.

  13. Hi Doris, I don't think it is the type of book I can dip in and out of or I will forget all the different characters, so it will force me to get on with it! Nothing like jumping in the deep end x

  14. Hi Leanne, I know what you mean, I used to have a couple of non fiction and fiction book on the go at the same time. At the moment I'm struggling to read one, even tho I love reading. All or nothing x

  15. I haven't read the Cloud Atlas but I am adding it to my want to read list, particularly after reading the comments. I like a good challenge. The year in books has been such a great incentive for reading and I enjoy now a much broader choice of books. If you don't find the time to read, you could try audio books. I listen to quite a few books when I am doing house chores or when I want to blend the general noise in my house out. x

  16. Hi Christiana, I have listened to a couple of Audio books in the car on long trips. You reminded me of how much I enjoyed them, I must look out for some more. I also like listening to books on the Radio Four, I have discovered some really good books this way. x
